The 2027 Maryland Small Business Digital Visibility Guide

How to Get Your Business Found on Google, Maps, Social Media and AI Search

There was a time when digital marketing meant one thing:

Build a website.

Then came Google.

Then Google Maps.

Then social media.

Then online reviews.

Then video.

Now customers can ask artificial intelligence to research businesses and help them decide who to contact.

The result is a fundamental change in how Maryland businesses need to think about marketing.

The question is no longer:

“Do I have a website?”

The question is:

“How many places can a potential customer discover my business?”

I’m Michael Spinoe, and I call this Digital Visibility.

What Is Digital Visibility?

Digital visibility is the ability of a business to be discovered, understood and evaluated across the online platforms customers use to make decisions.

That can include:

  • Google Search
  • Google Maps
  • Google Business Profile
  • Bing
  • Reviews
  • Social media
  • YouTube
  • Industry directories
  • Local publications
  • Other websites
  • AI-powered search

The stronger your presence across those environments, the more opportunities you create to be discovered.

1. Start With Google Business Profile

For local businesses, your Google Business Profile is foundational.

Make sure your information is accurate.

Use an appropriate primary category.

Represent legitimate services.

Maintain your profile.

Add authentic photos.

Encourage genuine reviews.

Your Business Profile should be consistent with your website and other important business information.

2. Build a Website Around Customers

Your website isn’t just an online brochure.

It should answer questions.

It should explain services.

It should establish locations.

It should demonstrate expertise.

It should make contacting you easy.

A strong local website should help a visitor understand:

Who are you?

What do you do?

Where do you work?

Why should I trust you?

3. Create Dedicated Service Content

If you provide several important services, don’t hide them all on one generic page.

A plumber might need useful pages about:

Water heater repair.

Water heater replacement.

Drain cleaning.

Sewer repair.

Leak detection.

Emergency plumbing.

A roofing company might need information about:

Roof repair.

Roof replacement.

Storm damage.

Shingles.

Commercial roofing.

Roof inspections.

The purpose isn’t to create hundreds of pages.

The purpose is to provide useful information about important services.

Google specifically warns against creating large amounts of content simply to capture search variations.

4. Build Legitimate Local Relevance

If you serve Frederick, Hagerstown, Gaithersburg, Rockville, Bethesda, Montgomery County or other Maryland communities, make your actual service coverage clear.

But local SEO shouldn’t mean:

“Frederick Frederick Frederick Frederick.”

That’s not useful.

Instead, demonstrate actual relevance.

Discuss:

The communities you serve.

The services you provide there.

Customer questions.

Local considerations.

Projects.

Experience.

Real examples.

5. Build Your Reputation

Your reputation exists outside your website.

Customers talk about you.

They leave reviews.

They mention businesses on social media.

Organizations list businesses.

Publications write about businesses.

Partners link to businesses.

Those external signals can help create a broader understanding of who your company is.

The goal isn’t to manufacture authority.

The goal is to earn it.

6. Create Content People Actually Want

The internet already has millions of articles saying:

“10 SEO tips.”

“5 marketing ideas.”

“7 ways to get more customers.”

Another generic article doesn’t necessarily add much.

Google’s current guidance specifically encourages unique perspectives, firsthand experience and information that goes beyond commodity content.

That’s why I believe business owners have an advantage.

You have experiences.

You have customers.

You have problems you’ve solved.

You have projects.

You have mistakes you’ve learned from.

You have knowledge.

Turn that experience into useful information.

7. Prepare for AI Search

AI search is changing how people research.

Someone might ask:

“Who are the best plumbers near Frederick?”

Or:

“I’m looking for a roofing company in Maryland that specializes in storm damage. What should I look for?”

AI systems can synthesize information from multiple sources.

That means businesses should make their information easy to understand and establish a legitimate online presence.

But don’t chase gimmicks.

Google’s current guidance says there aren’t special technical requirements for AI Overviews or AI Mode beyond being eligible for normal Search, and it recommends continuing foundational SEO practices.

The best long-term strategy is still:

Be useful.

Be credible.

Be clear.

Be discoverable.

8. Build Authority Outside Your Website

One website talking about itself isn’t enough to establish a powerful reputation.

Look for legitimate opportunities to be mentioned by:

Local organizations.

Trade associations.

Industry publications.

Business publications.

Community websites.

Podcasts.

YouTube channels.

News outlets.

Partners.

Other businesses.

The best backlinks aren’t simply “SEO links.”

They’re relationships.

9. Connect Everything

Your website shouldn’t operate in isolation.

Think of your digital ecosystem like this:

Google Business Profile

Website

Service Pages

Location Content

Blog

Reviews

Social Media

YouTube

Third-Party Mentions

AI Search

Every piece reinforces the broader story of the business.

10. Measure Visibility

Don’t simply ask:

“What’s my ranking?”

Ask:

How many customers can discover me?

Measure:

  • Organic impressions
  • Organic clicks
  • Google Business Profile activity
  • Calls
  • Website leads
  • Reviews
  • Local visibility
  • Important keyword groups
  • Referral traffic
  • Third-party mentions
  • AI visibility

Google also recommends using Search Console to monitor visibility in its generative search experiences.

The Maryland Digital Visibility Formula

Here’s how I think about it:

FINDABLE

Can people find you?

UNDERSTANDABLE

Can search systems understand what you do?

CREDIBLE

Does your online presence demonstrate trust?

RELEVANT

Are you showing up for the services and locations that matter?

USEFUL

Does your content actually help people?

CONSISTENT

Does the internet tell the same story about your company?

When those pieces come together, you aren’t simply doing SEO.

You’re building a digital presence that works across multiple discovery channels.

The Biggest Opportunity for Maryland Businesses

I believe there is a massive opportunity for businesses that stop treating marketing as separate silos.

SEO isn’t completely separate from reputation.

Your website isn’t completely separate from Google Maps.

Your reviews aren’t completely separate from your brand.

Your content isn’t completely separate from AI discovery.

Your online reputation isn’t completely separate from your sales process.

They’re connected.

That’s why I created my approach around one simple concept:

Digital Visibility.

Because the best business in the market doesn’t always get the customer.

Sometimes the customer chooses the business they can find, understand and trust.

I’m Michael Spinoe — THE Digital Marketing Guy — and I help small and medium-sized businesses in Maryland understand where they’re visible online, where they’re losing opportunities and what they can do to become easier to find.

Your competition doesn’t necessarily have to be better than you.

They may simply be easier to find.

And that’s a problem you can fix.

Why business owners choose to work with me. I’m a proven, President’s Club–winning digital marketer who brings real-world business experience as a former plumbing company owner — meaning I truly understand what local service businesses need to grow. Managing over 150 clients, I deliver honest, results-driven strategies that consistently generate leads, increase visibility, and drive measurable ROI.
