From Rockin’ Stages to Roadside Breakdowns: A Musician’s Journey into the World of Tractor Trailer Repair”

Imagine being a 22-year-old musician on your way to a 3-week gig in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. Your main responsibility is to keep track of your 1976 FORD box truck in the rear view mirror, which is hauling all your equipment. Suddenly, you realize that the truck has broken down, and to your dismay, you hadn’t noticed that your 4 band members and the truck broke down 50 miles ago. As if that wasn’t enough, the soundman, known for owning quite a loud PA system, let me know his displeasure of not paying attention to this fact. To this day I still don’t know how his voice could exceed the decibel level of his own PA system.

In the early hours of the morning, around 3 am, our band found itself in quite the predicament. The immediate task at hand was reaching out to our manager or any contact who might have information about the whereabouts of our stranded band members. It’s important to note that this happened in the era before smartphones, so the process involved a series of calls and messages, reminiscent of navigating a maze. After what felt like an eternity, we finally managed to establish contact, and let me tell you, that was just the beginning of a series of unexpected events.

With a scheduled gig in Ft. Lauderdale and the urgency to set up for our three-week stint, we decided to have the truck towed directly to the club. Time was of the essence, and as we unloaded and set up amid the uncertainty of the truck’s condition, we quickly contacted a local truck repair company. The silver lining to the situation was that we had a generous three-week window to fill while they made the repairs.

As the reality of the trucks issues unfolded during the inspection, it was evident that the cost of the repairs would hit us hard. Essentially, we ended up working for free during those three weeks, but the stories and experiences we gained made it a worthwhile trip. But, as you might expect, the drama didn’t end there. On our journey back home to Maryland, around 11:30 pm near Quantico, VA, the trusty truck decided to breakdown again. Fortunately, luck was on our side as we found ourselves close to a familiar club. An unexpected turn of events followed, complete with some much-needed downtime and, of course, the indulgence in adult beverages.

Financially, it might have been a bit of a setback, but looking back, it’s a chapter in our rock-n-roll youth filled with memorable experiences. That truck broke down more times than Ernest T Bass throwing bricks through windows in Mayberry. Eventually, we decided it was time to move on and bought a new truck. A nod of appreciation to the repair centers that inadvertently became a part of our rock-n-roll escapades. Here’s to the memories and the unspoken code of a young musician living life to the fullest. 🤘

The above truck is not ‘the’ truck. A close facsimile though. (minus the WHISKEY logo)
