This BLOG is not about a girl that I met back in 1988; it’s about how music, a band, or a song can transport you back in time to a place that you can almost taste, feel, and know exactly what you were doing at that exact moment.
I remember the first date I had with this woman. She came to see me play at a bar in Rockville, MD. Unfortunately for the band members that night, Maryland got hit with an ice storm, so this girl and I had to stay at the guitar player’s apartment. The next day, I drove her home, and I was surprised to see that she had a Steely Dan – A Decade of Steely Dan tape in her car. I had heard a few hits from them on the radio—PEG, RIKI DON’T LOSE MY NUMBER, DEACON BLUES. Later that week, I bought a nice stereo and added a CD player into the setup. I bought 3 CDs that day—Abbey Road, Paul McCartney All The Best, and Steely Dan – Decade of Steely Dan. I listened to Steely as much as I could. Reminding me of this girl that I had just met. Being exposed to this, I dug deeper into their albums, Aja, and Gaucho. Not only was I impressed with the hooks, the influence of jazz into their music, but also the high production value. I was a musician that was obsessed with the quality of recording, how crystal clean the producers of Steely’s albums got it. I thought the greatest album ever recorded was Sgt. Pepper until I really listened to Abbey Road… but when I heard Steely Dan’s stuff, I was blown away. To this day, I am and remain a huge Steely fan.
When I was growing up, I was exposed to all kinds of music, but one of my best memories is that on Sunday mornings sitting in our sunrooms, my dad would play some really cool records and try to play guitar to the songs. Thank goodness I didn’t inherit his musicality. As I sit here on an early Sunday morning, drinking a coffee with my dogs laying at my feet, realizing Spring is here, how fantastic would it be to have a sunroom to hang out in and sit back and enjoy those Steely Dan albums and reminisce. Taking me back to a young mans journey into early adulthood and all the beauty of my youth’s soundtracks and Steely Dan being one of them.
